unsourced info on search
[edit]Additional information about the search for FREE LIFE. I was Radio Officer on a vessel called m.v.LEKNES/GYUS. We sighted at close quarters the balloon as she crossed just ahead of us, as we proceeded NE up the American coast towards Newfoundland. I received a message that the balloon was missing and the estimated position of ditching; this was relayed to the Captain. The Captain made calculations saying the search area was wrong, he said the balloon would have to have been travelling at 100 knots (impossible)to be in that position. The Captain made his own calculations where the balloon would likely have gone down and made up a message accordingly which was addressed to USCG New york and relayed via Halifax radio. I started scanning airwaves and picked up a USCG cutter that was in the 'impossible' search area. I contacted the cutter and asked if they had received our 'message'; he said 'no', so I repeated our message to him, he came back to me saying this is very important information, please repeat allItalic text which I did. I monitored what the cutter did; it moved its search area to our estimated position and there they found wreckage. All this was logged in official ships log books if anybody wishes to research it.
